Armada Way replanting begins while felling investigation continues

Martha Lees

The first trees of the Armada way re-generation scheme have been planted, marking the restoration of green space in the city centre.

Over the past two years, visitors to Plymouth City Centre may have noticed the absence of foliage along the once flourishing Armada Way, following the controversial overnight felling of 110 trees in March of 2023. But as of the 3rd March 2025, replanting of the area has commenced.

The construction of new green spaces is planned to form part of the City Council’s bid for a “greener, safer, more family friendly city centre.” The proposed regeneration scheme includes the planting of 169 new trees, beginning with the Silver Lime species.

According to the Plymouth City Council website, the scheme is progressing at pace, however no set date has been given for when the project will conclude.

Tudor Evans, council leader, stated: “We wanted to mark this moment – it is a big deal.”

“Anyone who has been in the city centre recently will know that the scheme is cracking on at an incredible pace. There’s still a lot to do but this marks the start of the re-greening of Armada Way.”

The 2023 Armada Way felling prompted an investigation into the necessity of cutting down the trees, which Is still ongoing. The replanting is the first step towards restoration, returning nature to a city centre that has been too long stripped of its greenery.
